COVID and Riots Are Not the Biggest Challenges Seniors Face

By CarePatrol of Chicago Northshore
Today a social worker reached out for discharge help for a patient suffering from advanced dementia. I connected with the patient’s wife and asked how she was doing navigating in the last few weeks. I was concerned by what appeared to be caregiver burnout, and that the stress from the virus confinement plus the recent looting in her neighborhood was going to put her over the edge. She told me “Honey, I grew up in a rough Chicago neighborhood, and Frank’s Alzheimer’s scares me more than this virus and riots.”
Pandemics and property destruction are horrific, but they have nothing on a brain-eating disease that destroys your body from the inside out. How about being attacked on a daily basis by predators trying to scam you out of your life savings. Or the home that you raised your family in becoming a major obstacle to safety and independence. Then you factor in being marginalized by lack of social engagement, the difficulty of dealing with medication management, trying to handle clinical coordination between care providers, and the daily concern that your friends are succumbing to high acuity conditions requiring complex care.
This is what our seniors are dealing with on a “normal” day. Fortunately, navigating these complex senior care situations is what CarePatrol does best.
